    Trying To Please Others
    Living For Ourselves

Most of us come to a point in our lives when we question why we are doing what we are doing, and many of us come to realize that we may be living our lives in an effort to make our parents happy. This realization can dawn when we are in our 20s, our 40s, or even later, depending upon how tight a hold our family of origin has on our psyche. We may feel shocked or depressed by this information, but we can trust that it is coming to us at this time because we are ready to find out what it would mean to live our lives for ourselves, following the call of our own soul, and refusing any longer to be beholden to someone else's expectations.

One of the most common reasons we are so tied into making our parents, or others, happy, is that we were not properly mirrored when we were children. We were not honored as individuals in our own right, with a will and purpose of our own, to be determined by our own unfolding. As a result, we learned to look outside of ourselves for approval, support, and direction rather than look within. The good news is that the part of us that was not adequately nurtured is still there, inside us, like a seed that has not yet received the sunlight and moisture it needs to open and to allow its inner contents to unfurl. It is never too late to provide ourselves with what we need to awaken this inner being.

There are many ways to create a safe container for ourselves so that we can turn within and shine the light of awareness there. We may join a support group, go to therapy, or start a practice of journaling every day for half an hour. This experience of becoming is well worth the difficult work that may be required of us to get there. In whatever process we choose, we may feel worse before we feel better, but we will ultimately find out how to live our lives for ourselves and how to make ourselves happy.

    Monday with the Dragonmaster

Monday, September 8, 2008, 11:04 AM EST [General]

Well, Mortals, you heard me missive in me Diary of Magecraft, so I guess I'll say it hither at me RenSpace pages: DUMBLEDORE FOR PRESIDENT!

I have no intention of waiting about for it to be July, when Warners releases Half-Blood Prince, The Movie. I have simply concluded that the world has gone so bonkers that there be no way back ---- unless a revived, reincarnated Albus Dumbledore intervenes. He shares the same forces as our Exalted Father Merlin; doubtless, his power could give our sick, sad world the incentive it needs to save itself, lest the forces of Nastiness win the day, which, of course, must not happen!

Only Dumbledore, once properly secured in 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, could bring all the wonder he has long shared with his Hogwarts pupils to the one place where he should have been from the very first: the Presidency of these United States!

I welcome your comments, should you consider the very concept of a Dumbledore Presidency bonkers.

    Spoiled Orisha

    Monday, September 8, 2008, 10:03 AM [General]

Eleggua got a new rhinestone crown and a rose garland today - yes he is very, very spoiled LOL...

Most traditional Elegguas are made of concrete, but this one was made with a coconut shell brought from Cuba and given to me by a friend. The coconut is his sacred (and favourite) food. The eyes and mouth are made with buzio shells (cowrie shells) and the feather crown is made from a blackbird's tail. The coconut is filled with herbs, stones and witchy things which are sacred to him.

Eleggua is my santo de cabeza (head saint); that means we are consecrated to each other. Though I'm not an orthodox Santeria follower, nor do I beling to any official religious group, I like to spoil my Orisha like any santero does :) .

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reveal some things markets cannot do

Monday, September 8, 2008, 03:48 PM GMT [General]

The Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac rescue/state seizure by the US Federal Reserve lends more credibility to Martin Wolf's contention that the financial system is a subsidiary of the state. In comparison, the privatisation of Northern Rock by the British government is a modest tinkering on the edge. The Big Picture remarks: Yeah! We're all Socialists now!

The Lex Column at the FT notes:

"...drastically extending the role of the state cannot be what Paulson imagined he would be doing when he joined the Treasury from Goldman Sachs in 2006. But perhaps he is simply behaving like any good banker – he is expanding his balance sheet. The US government’s, after all, is pretty much the last one left in town."

Since their beginning both have acted as a kind of wall to prevent the sisfusian mortgage rock from rolling all the way back down the debt mountain. Government protections include access to a line of credit through the U.S. Treasury, exemption from state and local income taxes and exemption from Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) oversight.

Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) was born in 1938, set up by Roosevelt to encourage confidence in the housing market after the depression. Her twin Freddie Mac (Federal Home Mortgage Corporation) came thirty years later in 1968. James Quinn:

"...essentially, banks loaned people money for mortgages, the banks then sold on loans to Fannie or Freddie, which in turn packaged them into bundles to create bonds external investors could purchase.

This process worked for decades, with Fannie and Freddie’s bonds perceived - and therefore priced – as US government bonds, because of a perception that there was some implicit guarantee in the way the companies were established that would not allow them to fail."

    In 2003 Rob Alford noted:

"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are the only two Fortune 500 companies that are not required to inform the public about any financial difficulties that they may be having. In the event that there was some sort of financial collapse within either of these companies, U.S. taxpayers could be held responsible for hundreds of billions of dollars in outstanding debts."

And, domestically, as Robert Peston notes:

"...it gives a bit more credibility to Darling's claims that the UK's economic and financial woes are at least in part the consequence of a global storm, for which he shouldn't be blamed too much."

In some respects all we are seeing now is a manifestation of a reality that was always hidden underneath. Indeed, the US has always been good at talking up the free market without ever fully subscribing to it itself.

In sport, for instance, UK soccer has opened itself up to the highest bidder to such an extent that Manchester City's new oil rich owners are now, apparently, in position to outbid their previously wealthy local rivals for the player of their choice. A free market, which increasingly subordinates success on the field to success in attracting the highest investors.

In the US, sports remain rigidly regulated. In American Football for instance, the poorest performing teams get first pick of the draft of new players from College Football. Baseball teams are restricted as to how much they can pay (and therefore retain) their own players.

It's about as far from a free market system as it is possible to imagine. And yet it helps keep sport in the US competitive, in a way that UK soccer (speaking as an increasingly nominal City fan) is transparently not.

The question that comes to my mind is, can something as vital to a settled life in a stable democracy as the mortgage market ever be sustained by a truly free market? Chris Dillow thinks not.

    Um...I was promised mayhem?

Monday, September 8, 2008, 10:45 AM EST [General]

The VMA's...I'm gonna be completely honest with you...I gave up after Britney "opened" the show for less time then I use the bathroom! And I'm a super bad Jonah Hill fan...but nah.

I had this feeling, of overwhelming disappointment, time wasted, and lack of entertainment. I went upstairs and online. As the facebook status' of my friends who were watching changed every 30 seconds or so...I knew I made the right decision.

"WTF...this sucks" one friend said. "Britney's useless" said another. Yes, it's sad that many of us aren't entertained by a clean and sober Britney. But in past years the bar was raised with the Kidd Rock Tommy Lee fight and on stage cracks that went deeper then purity rings and political rants.

I guess that's all I ever really liked about the VMA's.
